Healthcare Disinfection

Protecting Lives with UV

In the US, each year over 700,000 patients suffer from an infection while hospitalized, leading to 75,000 deaths.  HAIs are difficult to treat since patients often have weakened immune systems and some pathogens have emerged as superbugs, having become resistant to antibiotic medicines.  While the CDC lists many pathogens of risk in healthcare settings, particular health hazards are posed by Clostridium difficile (C. diff) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Because of these, hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities implement disinfection protocols on exposed, high-touch surfaces using detergents, chemicals like bleach and germicidal deep ultraviolet (UV) light from mercury tube light sources.  Drawbacks are many however.  Applications of detergents and chemicals are prone to failure by human error and large mercury tubes cannot irradiate all surfaces quickly and easily.  UV tubes also contain toxic mercury, a material being phased out by international agreements like the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS).  RayVio’s deep UV LEDs have high UV output powers, safe materials and small sizes which enable the enhancement of healthcare disinfection in the following areas:

Disinfection of invasive medical instruments like catheters, probes and scopes

Disinfection of high touch surfaces like keyboards, portable electronics and door handles

Use in air cleaning and disinfection units; water disinfection for healthcare environments

With their small size and high durability, mobile and portable disinfection devices become possible opening whole new classes of disinfection technology and design for healthcare settings.
